How it works

  • AMPThe Dumbell ODS model dialed at edge-of-breakup pairs with the Stone 2x12 cab to deliver the massive headroom, punchy 6L6 low end, and silky highs heard on the album.
  • DYNComp 1 adds smooth analog compression that evens out delicate fingerpicking and helps single-coil notes bloom and sustain effortlessly.
  • EQBecause standard Strat pickups have a flatter midrange than Mayer's scooped Big Dipper pickups, Guitar EQ 1 gently scoops the lower mids around 400Hz while adding sparkle up top to nail his signature bell-like voice.
  • FX1A touch of warm Ana Dly slapback and rich Plate reverb recreates the intimate, high-end studio acoustic space of the Continuum recording.

The original rig

John Mayer achieves his signature warm, dynamic tone on Gravity using his Custom Shop Black One Stratocaster on the neck pickup through high-headroom Dumble and Two-Rock amplifiers blended together. Transparent overdrive pedals provide subtle mid-boost and sustain, while room microphones capture natural studio ambience for depth.

John Mayer (Rhythm and solo): Fender Custom Shop 'Black One' Stratocaster, Klon Centaur, Ibanez Tube Screamer (TS10 / TS808), Dumble Steel String Singer, Two-Rock Custom Reverb Signature, Custom Multi-Speaker Cabinet, Shure SM57, Beyerdynamic M88, Studio Room Microphones

Playing it

  • Play primarily with your thumb and fingers instead of a flatpick on the verse chords to achieve Mayer's warm, rounded snap.
  • Wrap your fretting-hand thumb over the top of the neck to anchor bass notes while your fingers embellish the triads.
  • Use a slow, wide, relaxed finger vibrato from the wrist to let single held notes ring cleanly.
