How it works

  • AMPThe Black Deluxe amp cranked to 65 delivers classic American tube edge-of-breakup compression and warm dynamic response.
  • PREThe TS Drv pedal is set with low gain and boosted volume, exactly how Stevie boosted Fender amps to fatten single-coil pickups with a vocal midrange push.
  • CABThe Tweed 4x10 cabinet mimics the fast transient attack and tight low-end snap of classic Fender multi-speaker setups.
  • FX2Spring reverb adds the authentic splash and dimension of an early-80s studio room and Fender combo tank.

Tuning

EbAbDbGbBbEb

The record is in Eb standard, low to high: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.

Tune your guitar the same way. Or make your version above, say how yours is tuned, and your Pulze Mini shifts it to match.

On the guitar

Made for a single-coil guitar (Strat style).

Rhythm shuffle

NeckBridge123
  1. 1Pickup Neck
  2. 2Volume 8
  3. 3Tone 9

Rolling guitar volume back slightly keeps the low strings tight, snappy, and percussive for the shuffle riff.

Lead breaks

NeckBridge123
  1. 1Pickup Neck
  2. 2Volume 10
  3. 3Tone 9

Open volume all the way up to push the front of the amp into singing, stinging blues sustain.

The original rig

Stevie Ray Vaughan's tone on Pride and Joy is anchored by his heavy-strung Stratocaster tuned to Eb, pushing cranked Fender and Dumble tube amps into natural power-stage saturation with a Roland Dimension D adding subtle stereo width in the mix.

Stevie Ray Vaughan (Rhythm and solo): Fender Stratocaster 'Number One', Ibanez TS808 / TS9 Tube Screamer, Fender Vibroverb, Fender Vibroverb 1x15 Cabinet, Dumbleland Head, 4x12 Speaker Cabinet, Roland SDD-320 Dimension D

Playing it

  • Dig hard into the low strings with your pick on the downbeat, then relax into a looser wrist for the up-strum shuffle.
  • Use your fret hand fingers to mute unplayed strings so you can rake across them aggressively without ringing unwanted notes.
  • Add a wide, fast vibrato using your entire wrist rather than just your fingers to get that signature Texas sting.
