How it works

  • AMPMarshell 800 running with Gain at 68 captures the extra front-end punch of S.I.R. Stock 39, the hot-rodded Marshall rented for the Appetite for Destruction sessions.
  • CABThe UK 4x12A cabinet pairs classic Greenback speakers with the amp, softening high-end harshness while preserving thick midrange crunch.
  • FX2A quarter-note digital delay and subtle plate reverb reproduce the studio rack ambience added at the mixing console.

Tuning

EbAbDbGbBbEb

The record is in Eb standard, low to high: Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.

Tune your guitar the same way. Or make your version above, say how yours is tuned, and your Pulze Mini shifts it to match.

On the guitar

Intro lead

NeckBridge123
  1. 1Pickup Neck

  3. 3Tone 7

Roll the tone back slightly to roll off the top-end bite and get that signature flute-like singing response.

Main solo

  1. 1Pickup Bridge
  2. 2Volume 10
  3. 3Tone 9

Switch to the bridge pickup for extra treble cut and aggressive bite during the fast wah-style run.

The original rig

Slash's tone on Sweet Child O' Mine relies on a Kris Derrig 1959 Les Paul replica with neck humbucker for the intro, plugged into a cranked SIR-modified Marshall 100W head. The smooth sustain comes entirely from the hot-rodded tube preamp and power amp distortion, embellished with studio rack delay.

Slash (Rhythm and solo): Kris Derrig 1959 Les Paul Replica, Dunlop Cry Baby Wah, SIR Modified Marshall 100-Watt (JCM800/1959), Marshall 1960 4x12 Cabinet, Roland SRV-2000 Digital Processor

Playing it

  • Anchor your right hand lightly near the bridge to keep unplayed strings dead silent as you navigate the string-skipping pattern.
  • Pick cleanly with strict alternate picking (down-up-down-up) rather than sweeping, keeping each note even in volume and length.
  • Let notes sustain fully without cutting them short, letting the delay trails seamlessly fill the space between phrases.
