How it works

  • AMPThe Tang R100 delivers the thick, saturated Orange Rockerverb distortion heard across the album.
  • PREA TS Drv pedal running low gain and high output tightens up the massive low-end of Drop A tuning before hitting the preamp.
  • DYNSince your guitar has passive medium-output humbuckers instead of Jim and Mick's active EMGs, the amp gain is bumped to 72 and boosted out front to match their heavy compression and punch.
  • DYNGate 2 clamps down quickly between palm mutes to deliver Slipknot's razor-sharp syncopated stops.

The original rig

The crushing rhythm tone on Psychosocial is driven by Drop A-tuned guitars with active pickups feeding high-gain tube amplifiers, kept tight and dry without ambient effects and layered via multi-tracking. Jim Root blended an Orange Rockerverb 100 with a Diezel Herbert, while Mick Thomson pushed his signature high-gain Rivera KR-7 head into matching Rivera 4x12 cabs.

Jim Root (Rhythm and solo): Fender Jim Root Signature Telecaster Prototype, Maxon TS808 Overdrive, Little Labs PCP Instrument Distro, Orange Rockerverb 100, Diezel Herbert, Rivera K412-MT / KR7 4x12 Cabinet, Stereo Double-Tracking

Mick Thomson (Rhythm and solo): Ibanez MTM1 Signature, Rivera KR-7, Rivera K412-MT / KR7 4x12 Cabinet, Stereo Double-Tracking

Playing it

  • Anchor your picking hand firmly near the bridge saddles to get tight, percussive palm muting on the lowest strings.
  • Pick aggressively downward on the main syncopated staccato riffs to let the noise gate cleanly cut off the silence between hits.
  • Keep your fretting hand relaxed when sliding between chords in Drop A to avoid accidentally sounding open strings.
