How it works

  • PREThe Marshell SLP model driven by Boost 1 recreates Eddie's legendary Variac-starved Super Lead head, providing rich harmonic saturation without turning muddy.
  • CABThe Green 4x12 cabinet with Celestion Greenbacks and a high cut at 7200Hz replicates the warm, woody speaker roll-off heard on the 1984 album.
  • FX2A subtle slapback tape echo and studio plate reverb recreate the signature Donn Landee and Sunset Sound recording chain.
  • ToneTailored for medium-output bridge humbuckers, pushing punchy upper-midrange bite that cuts through with classic Brown Sound authority.

The original rig

Eddie Van Halen achieved the rhythm and solo tone on Panama using a high-output bridge humbucker plugged into an MXR Phase 90 and a cranked Marshall Super Lead powered via a Variac, polished in the studio with stereo pitch-detuning and plate reverb.

Playing it

  • Attack the open-chord riffs with a firm pick strike close to the bridge to accentuate the signature chime and immediate percussive snap.
  • Catch pinch harmonics by grazing the string with the fleshy side of your picking thumb right after the pick strikes.
  • Keep your palm muting tight and bouncy on the low strings during the verses to drive the groove without choking the low end.
